Millis has about 50-100 autoshifts, they are the older trucks so that's why the new guys tend to get them. They will be phased out soon.
Millis operates a LITTLE west of the Mississippi, but with the exception of a Flagstaff terminal they tend to run East of the river.
** Just a side note, I DID meet Country in Trenton ;D Heck of a nice guy. What he said about Bill is right on the $$$, I had him for my instructor.
I'll be out with a trainer next week ;D FINALLY, I believe Country & I made a good decision.

HI Fozzy! How's the family? I finally got my CDL, but messed up my backing test sooooooooo...I'm taking the course again. Start again on Monday. Posted my "adventure" on TR. You'll have to fill me in on why passing the CDL skills test yet failing a backing test will make you complete the whole course..this one makes me scratch my head! Family is fine, Kids are all still for sale (but hide when the gypisies are in town), Angie is working at an old time soda fountain and I've lost over 40 pounds! LOL hows that for a quick up date! ;D Fozzy

Hey Skull TR is Truckers Road, another message board. My journal is posted here: www.truckersroad.org/ubbt/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/29177/an/0/page/0#29177The good the bad and the ugly WOW Fozzy! 40lbs That's terrific!! Kid's for sale huh? Shoot, I would have had to pay people to take mine. Tell Ang Hello for me!! We have 3 backing tests, for course requirement. The tests are stricter than they are for the CDL test, and they also have a time limit. I didn't "have" to take the course again because I did do well enough to get my CDL, but, I think it will make me a better driver. I want to be one of those drivers that can put that trailer anywhere! LOL

I would ask you few a simple questions: Do you feel that you can see the trailer while you back and know where all of the "corners" are? Can you make the trailer go where you want it to? If this is about speed or being uncomfortable, there is really no amount of training that will ease this. I always thought that the CDL tests backing test was a bit stupid. There should be NO time limits nor limits on pull ups. This encourages bad practices!!! Telling a new driver that they MUST get the trailer in a space and do it quickly is simply no way to make the driver better. This will tend to set up a situation where a driver "takes a chance" that everything will clear and instead of taking the time or the extra pull up, they end up ripping my fender off!!! In the real world as long as you make it into the "hole" without running into something YOU PASS!!!! No limits pull ups!!!!! If it takes 40 pull ups to see into the space then use them. If it takes 20 minutes to complete this maneuver big whoop! If you will be going out with NightShift on the truck then I'd go out and hit the trail and learn on your own pace doing all the backs that you can get in. It will be awhile before you feel NO stress when backing...one day it will just "click" and you'll never know why you had a problem in the first place. Best of Luck! Fozzy

For the most part, the answer is yes. I do have trouble catching the "drift" soon enough at times. When I wouldn't catch the drift, instead of letting me figure it out, instructors would be at the window telling me how to turn etc. That in itself isn't a problem, but what is a problem for me, is when there are different instructors telling me different ways of "fixing" it. Turn harder, quicker, not so much angle, move slower, etc. I never put myself in danger of hitting anything thank goodness. The speed issue only comes during the testing phase. We have a strict 5 minute time limit for all the exercises, over the 5 minutes you fail and it's 50 points. The pull ups only cost 1 point. The time issue does make me nervous, but I think if I knew for sure exactly what to do, the time limit wouldn't be an issue. I think what I need to do this time, is not worry about how much time I'm taking up (meaning, making other students wait for their turn) and listen to the instructors that seem to know how "I" do this the best. I'm a slow mover, but tend not to wait long enough for the correction to take effect. I'm not looking forward to the long hours in the sun, and the classwork will be especially boring this time around, but if it means I'm a better driver, then I'll do it. Eventually, NS and I will be heading out together, but we are still waiting to see if Millis will allow it. Might have to switch companies

"instead of letting me figure it out, instructors would be at the window telling me how to turn etc."
I have found that many, many instructors are far too impateint to allow a student to fumble through backing manuvers, it is just too easy to just TELL the student what to do and when...and call it teaching. An instructor driving the truck using the students hands is really not teaching. But how will the student drive when the instructor is not there coaching them in West Memphis Arkansas at 2:23 AM with the receiving boss standing there mad because he cannot back in?
We aught to just give up and start our own school, I bet we could beat what is out there now!
