I went thru an 8-week course in 1993. The same school has now shortened that course to a 6-week one and I think that is becoming more and more standard. It was a community college course.
You might want to modify the poll to include schools such as mine - a 6 - 8 week community college course is pretty common.

People want to get thru these schools and get out on the road driving for a company. Students must realize you need time to digest all you're learning. The more time the better. The more time you spend in school the more prepared you will be when it comes time for you to go to work as a driver Practice+Time=Quality

Well, I think I've made my point in "other threads" about which school I like, so I'm not going to repeat myself.
The most important part of good training is learning how to be safe. If that can be done in a shorter period of time than 5+ months then so-be-it.
Don't get sucked into training by anyone but a "seasoned driver". Anything less than that and you're shorting yourself a proper education.

I can't figure out how to modify it. Modify only lets me modify the message, but not the poll itself. I've since decided on Bates Tech anyway, but others might be curious. I went out on the road with another driver for a month. My 1st time behind the wheel of a rig was on the PA Turnpike in ealy March in a friggin blizzard! I don't think I went over 40 mph for the next hundred miles. You wanna talk about "pucker factor"!!! The guy that was training me kept gettin' mad at me cause when he got behind the wheel, he had to wipe it off. This was way before the CDL program came about.

I used to get "student drivers" thrown into my truck back as far as 1981! About all you had to do back then was pass a 25 question written test, and they would rubber stamp your head with "I Are a Truckdriver" stamp!
After that, then I got to train them "Old School".....I am lucky to be alive today.

I thought this thread would be a good place to announce that I got hired!
The reason I chose this thread is because of something the recruiter said. His company, Haney Truck Line, will only hire students from the school I'm going to. The 22 weeks of training really does count for something. Also, Bates is the only training facility in Washington state that meets the requirements for pulling doubles right out of school.
With only six school days left before I go to work, I can tell you that the time has gone by faster than I ever imagined. All 11 people in my class feel the same way. We're really glad we chose this course and appreciate the awesome training we've had.
Way to go, Bates!

I used to be at a six week school, and now I am at a three week school. Three weeks is short, not enough time for everything.....I admit it. But three week schools are all we have here. I am glad they have trainers going with them when they graduate, perhaps one day I will become a company trainer again.
But it is tough when ex-students visit after a month and I have forgotten thier names.

Scott, The Bates web site kind of sucks. They just about hide their Truck Driver information, so it's no wonder that enrollment is down. Bates Home PageLong Haul and Local Class InformationYou can download PDF's with full class descriptions and schedules. If you can't find something in particular, let me know. If I can get what you're looking for before I'm working I will. Otherwise I can get you in contact with one of the instructors who does recruiting. He would be happy share information about the program. Note: I just noticed on the Program Details for the Long Haul, it has all the instructors listed. Don Smith is the one to contact if you have questions about anything. (no, I don't think they're looking for instructors)

doubleclutch, I have mixed feelings...
Part of me is excited to "get on with it" and go to work. At the same time, I know I'll miss going to school for awhile.
Over the past 5 months, I've made some lifelong friends. The end of our training is kind of bittersweet. The time we've had together as students is a lot like being in basic training or at college.
Intellectually, I know there comes a time when I have to go it alone, but I'll miss the guiding voice of my instructor who is to be able to sense things before they even happen. He assures me I'll think that way too. I hope so...
Scott, You're welcome!
