I am getting ready to start CDL school after the first of the year. I need to do as much homework on employment as I can prior to graduation, what is the best way to do this? Do I apply for jobs or talk with recruiters or how far can the process go before the companies consider you commited to them??? I have seen people on this board mention "confirmed offers", what exactly are they and how to get them? I will not have a whole lot of time after school to pick someone and get to work so it is very important for me to do all I can now!! Thanks in advance for any help you all can give me, I know most of you are either going through this process now or are alredy past it so I am counting on your expertise in this matter!!!!

1. Compile a list of schools in your area, giving preference to Vo-tech or Community colleges. 2. Ask the schools which carriers pre-hire their students. 3. Call the carriers directly and ask them what success they have had with graduates of the schools you are considering. A carrier will normally prehire you if you fill out an application and include documentation you are or will be attending the school. The pre-hire will be conditional, requiring you to graduate before an actual job offer will be made. It's like them saying "IF you graduate, we will hire you." You maight also consider a carrier with it's own school, such as Schnieder. (For info on them, go to www.pumpkindriver.com )

Thanks Flyboy for your reply! I have already selected a school, it is my area Technical College and they are PTDI certified. I think Rhoel hires quite a few of their grads? I think there are 5-6 companies that recruit from there at least. I am just not sure how to go about the process of getting companies to pre hire without being commited to any one, I would like to be able to weigh my options at the time I graduate! I figure once I go through the school I will know more about what I want exactly. Is it wrong to line up more than one pre hire? I appreciate your feedback!

Is it wrong to line up more than one pre hire? I appreciate your feedback! Heck, not at all.. Be honest with the carriers that you speak to, say that you are shopping for the best place. Every driver "shops." Just tell them you are interested in them and would like them to take a look at your application to see if it fits their requirements / qualifications.
