Hello everyone . . . I was never a regular contributor here, but this was one of the first sites I found several years ago when I was first looking into trucking, and it was one of the most helpful. These boards, and Rachelle's old driving journal, and then the book on surviving the first year of driving, went a long way toward helping me decide to make the move to try driving as a career.
I've been driving 3 years now, and I love it as much as anything I've ever done. I went to school at Schneider, drove with them a year (really enjoyed it), then drove locally in Ga. for 15 months (to let me be able to help with my grandmother so she wouldn't have to go to a nursing home as soon), and now I've been back with Schneider for 9 months teaming with a guy I have known since college.
Several things I can say after 3 years:
(1) You can have a good experience at a big company; I have been very happy with Schneider. I know a lot of factors go into that, but I think the most important is your own attitude and the person you deal with in dispatch every day. I'd recommend Schneider to any beginner.
(2) I've ran logging legally (with Schneider) and not legally (when I ran for a local company, the way their routes were set up, it would have been impossible to run it legally); I prefer running legally, and if someone says you can't make money and do that, I would say that I have been able to do it. (Could I make more at another company running illegally? Sure. But I'm just saying you can do it right and still come out okay.)
(3) I'm going back to driving solo at the end of the year (team driver has found a woman to love, so we are on different paths now). I'm thinking about doing something like driving with KRB overseas somewhere for a year (purely for $). Anyone here know anything about doing that?
Cheers to everyone and I'm glad to see this site is still here. I have seen some posts by Tom -- is Rachelle still around? And, if so, what are you doing these days?
