Dear truckertom, Or any instructor, I'm 19 years of age and I'm going for this job at penske. Now, for them i have to get my cdl by a certain time. I'll be a fueler/ washer/ detailer, and a truck hiker. I'll keep this job till 21, now, if i'm correct this type of experience wont qualify me for a student driver position at some companies will it? What will i have to do when i turn 21 and ready to go otr? I just dont want to mess up my chances with getting a trucking job. I'm also stuck at whether to obtain the cdl by school or take the test at the dmv and use my friends truck at penske (I know the ole' days of taking the test and hoping in dads/ uncle truck are over, i just need some guidance).

Pete
I guess you may have the same trouble I had when I was a young driver, I was lucky to have a relative in the business and back then the test consisted of 25 questions and if you passed, you were a driver. But yes, those days are gone.
But I will say this: Any experience you can get now will do nothing but help you down the road. If Penske will help you get your class A CDL you may just have to stick with them until you are old enough to go OTR. Also, a good work history and driving record will also look good a few years from now. You may use this time to go to diesel mechanics classes if you can. Who knows, you may have change of mind in a few years and rather be a mechanic.
If you do go through a school when you get a little older, they offer tuition re-embursement and some offer company training. When the time comes, you may take a state certified training course, some are as short as 3 weeks, and if you have been exposed to trucking in the past it may serve you well. I know you are bustin' a gut to get on the road, but take some time and enjoy this part of your life. It only comes once and the road will still be there when you are ready.
Go ahead and e-mail me if you need to get a little more personal with your situation, I'm here to help.
