If you end up attending a CDL school owed by the company and they have auto-shift; what do you do if you ever switch companies and drive for one who uses standard? How do you get trained? Is it a bad idea to get trained in auto-shift? Looking for some opinions

You will have to learn to shift a standard. It is best to learn to shift a standard first and you will always be able to go back to it.
There were some old timers at one company I know of that scoffed at the Autoshifts when they were assigned to them, now the company can't pry them out of them.
I have never driven one being an oldschooler except to back one in for a driver that couldn't back into a door.

The company I'm applying to has a few "paddle shifters". But they are being fazed out. Not many of the drivers like the lack of control.

Is it a bad idea to get trained in auto-shift? Only my personal opinion, but I think it is bad. You've brought up the exact point as to why that is... What *do* you do when you change carriers? Shifting a truck is *nothing* like shifting a manual transmission in a car, though many people think it must be similar. I promise that it isn't. If you learn on an auto, you could easily find yourself trapped with that carrier. A new carrier will probably road test you and it is quite unlikely you'd pass. Personally, I'd probably quit a job before I'd drive an auto-shift. I mean, what else do I have to do besides shift? I take pride in my shifting and like to do it. It is a pain in the butt to learn, I admit, but once you get good at it, I think most drivers like shifting.

He is 75 and when he sold his truck and retired, he went to work driving for an equipment auction company here in Fort Worth. So he has to be able to drive anything from a two speed axle to a Tri-Plex double knucklebuster.
I have to hand it to the old man, he is one hell of a trucker.

Yeah, he drove back when you didn't dare put your thumbs through the steering wheel spokes on those non-power steering Autocars......you would get your thumbs knocked off! LOL!
