Hello. Recently, I applied for Prime Trucking, out of Mo. Seems to be one of the "few" trucking companies out there that will give a non-graduate CDL holder a job. It is getting tough to find work out there? With a little retraining or remedial from Prime, I could get rolling and get some money comin' in. I have 2 questions for anyone here who wishes to help a newbie. I read in one of the threads that you should avoid Prime and Swift at all costs! Can someone please explain why this was said? I have also been warned to stay away from J.B. Hunt....but no one will say "why"? Anyone know the scoop here as well?
My 2nd question is...what is the low-down on driving reefers and flatbeds as compared to each other, as well as van?

Most of these "stay away from _________" stories are started by disgruntled ex-employees (for a bazillion reasons) or people who for various other reasons did not meet the standards to GET hired by these companies. Trucking is Trucking and companies vary MAINLY on the color of paint they choose for their trucks. The starting / training companies get a bad rap because they funnel THOUSANDS of people through their trucks. These companies take a lot of BS from everyone because they simply are more visible on the roads and they have a lot of people who FAIL. These failure would almost assuredly have happened no matter where they went. Prime is no better nor any worse than 99% of the fleets out there. DO NOT buy into this "be your own boss" crap of the lease operator right off the bat!

I read in one of the threads that you should avoid Prime and Swift at all costs! Can someone please explain why this was said? I have also been warned to stay away from J.B. Hunt....but no one will say "why"? Anyone know the scoop here as well? It can't really be explained why drivers choose to bash one carrier over another. They're all pretty much alike, it is just a matter of which one fits you best. All of those jobs are a burn. There is just no getting around it, if you're driving for one of those large OTR carriers you're going to be getting hosed the entire time. You'll be working 100+ hour weeks, and you'll seldom see home. You'll be out 10-14-20 days then they'll give you two days off and expect you to thank them for it. That's the way it is in this industry. You're not protected under any fair labor standards, and minimum wage doesn't apply to you. If you want to do it, you're going to have to suck up the bad about it, and hope that you can land a better job once you have the experience.
