Ok, so the title of this thread is misleading, because--being a newbie--I have no idea which companies are good and which ones should be wiped from existence; that said, I have been looking into Covenant and Central Refrigerated--they seem like decent companies, but I have heard horror stories about the first. TruckerTom says to buy a Covenant driver a meal and ask him/her about their job. Not a bad idea, but my question is this: does anyone know of any other strong carriers for a beginning driver? And as long as we're posing questions... who has the best burger: Jack in the Box, Wendy's, Whataburger, Chili's, or other? Thanks drivers.

The best "starter" company is really almost impossible to pick. I lean towards Schnieder for their training and Werner for their paperless logs. When you get down to the nitty gritty, the paint on the truck is the primary difference. I also have heard some pretty wild stories about Covenant. Stories are VERY hard to take completely seriously because there are just too many people who are just not ready to adjust to the "lifestyle changes" and simply make mountains out of molehills so they feel better about leaving...

Mary Kay Cosmetics....The pink Peterbilt.
But you have to have years of experience to drive for them, but it is something to shoot for.

To answer the question about which company is the best in the world, you have to look at yourself. What do you want to get from the company? Make a list of what you expect, and what you are willing to do.
Take this list with you when you go for your interview. Remember that the interview goes both ways. The company is interviewing you to see how you may be of service to them. You are interviewing the company to see how they may be of service to you.
Learn what the company has planned for the future. See if they can offer you the changes you will wish to see as your time with them passes. Will you want a dedicated run? More home time aas the family grows? More road time when the kids are gone? A spot for the wife/hubby when you want to share a week together?
If you do your research on the company, you will be happier with your time with them.
Remember that after a while, the grass looks greener with someone else. Think long and hard what they use to make that grass green. Some form of fertilizer I think.

Try Transport America. I was with them but I had to come home, but my fiance' is still with them. They put you through 10 days of training, most of it is backing, there are 5 maneuvers you have to be able to do, and that training comes in very handy. During your 10 days in Scottsburg, Indiana, they will put you up in a hotel (its not fancy, clean rooms and a pool) and they cover all three meals (continental breakfast (sucks), lunch which is catered and pretty good, and for dinner they give you a voucher for $7.50 you can use at either McDonald's, Ponderosa or the restaurant with the motel. The motel food is pretty good. Getting you to Scottsburg, they will get you a bus ticket, rental car, or take the company van, it depends on where you are. And the best thing about it: TA pays for it all. Nothing comes out of your pocket. That is one of the reasons we went with them.
TA has the usual BS that you will find at just about any company. Their terminals are clean, most have showers and laundry and a few of them I was at have very nice TV rooms, with recliners and all. ;D
They don't have the prettiest equipment, but it is decently maintained. The trucks are governed at 64.5 MPH, but we could get it up to about 68 MPH.
