Hello, Hope everyone had a safe and HAPPY X-Mas.
This may sound silly but doe anyone know if most companies allow you to take your dog with you to work. Schneider National (Canada) e-mailed me after I asked a few questions and offered me training. BUT when I asked about pets they said not in THEIR trucks. Well that let them out as I have to take the dog. I made a commitment to him when I rescued him from the S.P.C.A and I will not abandon him now. I do not have a family,am divorced and can make home where ever I am so you would think taking the dog would be a small inconvenience to them as I am willing to put up a bond for any damage. Any companies that you know of allow pets? I am in BC Canada. Everyone have a HAPPY NEW YEAR.

www.everytruckjob.com is one of the many sites that you can search companies and they will have listed if they have a pet policy or not.

I guess I am just a little too old school to put a dog in a truck with me. I wouldn't want to drive with a team driver that licks his butt, why would I want a dog that does the same thing?
Butt, to each thier own. I know it may help fight the lonliness of the road. Some companies make you pay some extra insurance or something.

Yes, that is true, most companies want to pretty hefty deposit for any damage a dog does to the truck.

Well, I dearly love my dog and wouldn't begin to consider any carrier that wouldn't let me take her if I was OTR. A lot more carriers are allowing it now than ever before. A word of warning, though, it is a lot of extra work to have a dog in the truck. I get so mad at drivers who have these 100+ pound dogs that only get out once per day... what kind of life is that for the dog? I used to walk my dog at least once and usually twice per day - and I'm talking walks, not just pee breaks - and that time came out of my sleeping time, which was often exhausting.
Still, though, to me, it was worth it for the companionship.

I was walking into the fuel desk one day, and some drivers chihuahua was standing on the drivers seat, honking the little bitty horn on his owners Volvo.
I swear he was grinning and he had a devilish twinkle in his eye as he tapped out "SOS" in morse code.

What about training? Can the dog go OTR while training? I know it depends on the trucking company and also the trainer but has anyone heard of such a thing.

What about training? Can the dog go OTR while training? I know it depends on the trucking company and also the trainer but has anyone heard of such a thing. I have serious problems with this idea. If you were asking if you could take an infant the idea would sound pretty strange or bad too you. During the training phase, all the reasons you would take a dog are eliminated. The protection, the companionship and all the other reasons. When you are in the training cycle, you are there to focus on the tasks presented to you for this job. ANYTHING that can be a distraction while trying to digest all of this info is detrimental to the chances of success. There is also the problem if you get out on the road and are either washed out of you simple decide that you want to come home. Getting the dog home adds immensly to the costs of getting you home. I vote no for the pets during the training. After that they are just something that is a personal choice. Good Luck, Fozzy

I would try finding a kennel while going through training. I know it is not really what you want to do, but you have to do something. When I go back out, my boys are going to my moms house.
I wish we could take our two with us, but they are to big and bad. I saw a guy in a truckstop and I swear he had at least 5 dogs in the truck. He might have had more!

Heck, I can't spell when I am awake. But I am a fifth wheel baby so that is the story I'm sticking with.
