Hi folks,
I am new here. I am about to sign up for driver training with Swift. I am told that I will have to work for them for 2 years for them to forgive my loan for school.
I need honest opinions of how Swift is. I can't afford to pay forschool anyother way and the Swift School will be my home terminal as well. So, when I do get home, I'll just drive across town.

If you are going to drive with Swift, be prepared for alot of ridiculing while on the road. There are not alot of drivers out there who have anything good to say about Swift. I, for one see it as you trying to make a living the same as everyone else. I have never ridiculed another driver for his choice of company to work for. But as anyone here with experience will tell you, it happens everyday. Swift has slow trucks. Their drivers are considered inexperienced. If there is an accident, or someone has their hood removed at a truckstop, you can almost gaurantee somewill will ask if it was a Swift driver, or a J.B. Hunt driver. I don't want to steer you away from any one company, but 2 years is a long time to put up with other drivers down-talking you, and hearing them ribbing you everytime you turn the CB on. I have alot of patience, but I do not think I would be able to laugh it off for long. Everyone loses their temper at a certain point.

It does seem to be some nice equipment those swifties are crashing up though. Not all of their drivers are bad, but they do seem to have more than their share of bad drivers. I posted photographic evidence of one of them messing up in the general forum last month, and just last Friday I saw one driving the wrong way down a one way residential street at a rather high rate of speed.

I really don't understand, I thought that there was so much comradiry in this buiness. Those who stick together win huge battles. This doesn't sound like the case here.

Well, there are those that say truckers as a group, if they were to stick together, could wield alot of power (I'm of that opinion myself). And yet, truckers are some of the very few groups of workers that give free hours to their employers every week (although, as individuals, they complain about it). Does that answer your question?

Things aren't like they were 20-25 yrs ago. Back then most truckers looked out for each other. The industry has seen a lot of that comaraderie evaporate, much as morals in general society seem to have declined. There are great numbers of new drivers out there, and many of them do not display the common courtesies of the road. For example, in the past week I have had exactly 1(!) Swift driver flash his lights to signal me over after I had passed him. I try to be as courteous and helpful as I can. I realize the effort may be wasted on a lot of drivers, but I still try. You try, too. Maybe we can be a couple of bright spots in a darkening world.

Their equipment seems to be pretty nice though. I have yet to see a ratty Swift truck. Of course the driver could have garbage strewn through the interior, and may have urinated on the curtain, I don't know.

It may just be here in the South, but I have seen LOTS of ratty looking Swift trucks. Come to think of it, I have seen them in all 48 States...LOL Now I don't know about the yellow stained curtains, but I have seen quite a few that looked in need of a body shop.

I've only seen one that was in need of a body shop. That was about two minutes after it was wrecked though. ;D
I see a lot of ratty MS Carrier trailers, but all the swift trucks I see around here look fairly new. Yellow is the one with the ratty equipment around here. I need to snap a pic of this one truck I see every day... It has to be from the 60's.
