Ive decided i want to be a truck driver .. or try anyway and i have questions that seem impossible to get answers too.
Im looking for answers from people with experience .. truck drivers, employees of those companies, people with real experience with those companies, .. etc
First of all i ran my own business for six years with little paper trail (web design/SEo etc) other than the IRS hounding me for money. I'm wondering if thats going be a problem.
I'm in the southeast so im assuming only a company from the se is going to hire me. Im flat broke right now so need sponsored training. Im looking at pam transport, would like to try schneider maybe but dont know if they are in the SE. I looked at Roehl but dont think therye in the SE. Any feedback on these schools or info on who besides pam operates out of the southeast?
How many hours a week does the average driver actually work (ie time he has to be driving/loading/unloading etc).
How much "fudging" are you expected to do. I came from an industry where dishonesty is pretty widespread and while im NOT comparing them.. I wont deal well with people pressuring me to break the law or cheat. Now im not talking about writing down fifteen minute load/unload times. But some of the stuff i hear people doing is scary. With drivers so hungry for the buck theyre making the roads dangerous. Im not going to drive when im too tired to drive.. especially because a company pressures me too.
If you want to arrange things so you have more time home (assuming you are willing to trade off other things like money). Ive travelled more than anyone ive ever met BUT a trucker and love travelling. Actually love the long drives from nc to florida. But im asking in case i find i dislike weeks at a time of OTR.
Will a new company driver tell us how much he ACTUALLY made last year, what company, what kind of driving?
Ive read and read, including the "pregnant dog sites" (Dear god truckers pregnant dog a lot) and am just looking for Straight answers.. and those arent going to be provided by a recruiter.
Thanks a LOT in advance. Im calling Roehl and Schneider today, if theyre open to talk to them. Would really appreciate any advice as i plan on committing to something tomorrow.
