I started school at American Institute of Technology in Las Vegas on 7/12/04. I chose to do the CTD course which is 2 weeks classroom, 2 weeks range, and 6 weeks externship. I have completed the first 2 weeks so far, and I will be starting the range portion tomorrow. A lot of information is thrown at you very quickly. My instructor did an outstanding job teaching and clarifying all of the rules and regulations that where covered. He went above and beyond what was technically required by the school itself. As far as the range goes, they have 3 people for each truck 8 hours each day. I got lucky and there will only be two of us in the truck that I will be learning in. Actually they have 3 trucks that have different transmissions and we will be driving all three at some point.
This school is accredited and ptdi certified. Their equipment is in fairly good shape, and overall I am very happy that I chose this school.
The company that I have chosen to drive for is Gordon Trucking (as I have said in previous posts). While all companies have their pro's and con's, this one seems to fit my needs and wants the best. They have one of the lower turnover rates of "starting" companies that I have looked into, which is a good sign. As well, they won't offer a prehire until they see your scores from the first portiion of the school. Nor, do they hire out of "any" school. These are all good signs to me that they are at least making an attempt at getting quality drivers, and are fairly squared away.
At any rate I will post here again as my training progresses for those that are interested.
