I've thought about the same thing since the kids has growed up and gone......However, I don't think the wife is going to go for it. ...........She does not like city driving.
I drove years ago, and it looks as if I'm going back to driving.
I have been looking at a few companies here's some of my thoughts.
US Xpress, located in Medway Ohio.
They will train the both of you.
You would be in class 7 days a week, for 3 weeks until you go over the road at which time the two of you would be seperated until you pass your CDL's..........And they LOVE MAN & WIFE TEAMS!
www.xpressdrivers.com/training.htmlBut if I was to go with US Xpress with my spouse, I would go into Fairborn, OH. and rent an apartment for a month [cheaper then a motel] you can get one for about $450.00 to $500.00 a month. (a friend my lived there for a while)
I think you would be a lot happier then being in the Barracks at the terminal.
US Xpress will take $50.00 a week until you have paid for the school. School cost $2750.00
However; Schneider National will paid for your motel and 2 meals a day while your in training and then after the first 11 day they will pay you while you training.
But you own them a year after that.
Schneider pays better then US Xpress does during your training period.
Swift pay during training is about the same as Schneider's.
www.schneider.com/drivers/companyDrivers.htmlSwift, "NOW"; also pays you while you are training.
www.swifttruckingjobs.com/academy.htmlCheck with Job and Family Services they seem to have information about some money for Schooling and/or training if you are unemployed.
There is more to a good driving job, then just miles
Look at the Medical Insurance cost to you and coverage amount.
Detention Pay how long before you received it, and how much
(not less than $12.00 per hour/after 2 hours)
[ other wises you may set at the dock all day]
Load and unload pay? NOT LESS THAN... $80.00 AND UP
YOU MAY SPEND A DAY UNLOADING TRUCK.
AT $0.30 A MILE YOU MAKE $15.00 PER HOUR, WHY UNLOAD FOR LESS?? (AND IT APPLYS TO THE 14 HRS RULES) .....
Lumpers ..........do they pay them ?
DO NOT START PAYING LUMPERS, OUT OF YOUR POCKET
IF THE COMPANY PAYS LUMPERS, GET A COMCHECK FOR THE AMOUNT TO COVER IT.
[Do not take a payroll advance to pay lumpers] or allow the company to include a refund of lumpers fees in your payroll check, "Other wise you are paying the lumpers taxes".
Layover Pay?
Break down pay/motel paid in case of break down?
AND GET IT ALL IN WRITING.
FIRST OF ALL IT'S A JOB, GET PAID FOR DOING IT!
Good Luck
If that what you want, go for it!
