Well I've done it. As of April 10th I've begun my schooling. Unfortunately I'm doing the weekend thing. I'm gonna try to take two weeks vacation from work to attend fulltime and shorten my completion time of July. But I do have a question for ya. After graduation and if I'm hired by a carrier who takes recent grads, do I have to attend their school or do I go out with a trainer ofter orientation I'm thinking of Schneider or Cardinal Logistics, both have terminals nearby. (I hope I'm posting in the right location for this query)

I know SNI will require you to go with a trainer for a few weeks.
This is pretty typical of most carriers.
A company school would be overkill, however SOME do require a short course of a few days before going with a trainer.
BTW, I know nothing of Cardinal, but SNI is a decent company to start with.

doubleclutch- SNI does have a school you will go to. It's called a "Finishing School". Don't know about Cardinal. This is where you go out on the road with a company trainer from 4 to 6 weeks to learn about "The Road". You'll also learn more about the company, their paperwork, log books etc.

I called Cardinal two weeks ago and they require one year experience, no recent grads.

Thanx to Squirrelbait, Scott and Range Rat for your replies. Sorry it took me so long to acknowledge your posts. I did look further into Cardinal and yes they don't take recent grads They were offering a flatbed job here in New England that sounded great. I also stopped in at SNI and spoke to a few drivers. They seemed to like driving for them. Guess I'll have to contact them to explore them further. For now I seem to be doing ok in school, 3 of us to the truck in the yard for backing maneuvers. Looking forward to going out on the road with trainer. For now must practice my backing.

Hi Everyone I start school May 17 and boy am I nervous! I'll be going with the hubby OTR this summer. Any tips would be welcomed. I now work as a school cook so this will be a change for me. LOL I'm scared yet excited too. His advice (hubbys) was not to let the trailer intimidate me. You think my wide eyes gave it away when he let my try my hand at driving? I won't go into double clutching cause that's going to take some retraining, it's not like a car for sure! Thanks

You will do fine, I have found that ladies listen really well. Sometimes have the macho thing to get over.

Thanks I've been warned about the guys giving me a hard time but after working with kids for the last 14 yrs ( not including raising my own) I should be able to handle it. LOL This is a welcomed challenge. Thanks again

Well, I passed my road test. I am now the proud holder of a CDL-A license with a hazmat endorsement. Now to find a carrier to begin my TRUE training.
