Believe you me, for the last 5 weeks, ever since I "retired" from my last employer, I've spent boo-koo hrs on the pc doing career, work, and education searches. Fozzie, when do you graduate from Bates? Cool! I don't know why I couldn't find that information when I looked last night.

My class runs until May 14th. Even if I get my CDL before that, I plan to stay on just to finish the course and get all the training I can before going on.
Part of my incentive to stay on till the end is due to a "live" application I have with Pierce Transit. I passed the first part of their hiring process. The next step, which is an interview in front of a board, is due any time between now and June. If the timing is right, I hope to get an interview before I'm accepted for employment at one of the trucking companies I will apply to.
As much as I like driving trucks, the transit job would keep me home and the benefits are great. If that doesn't pan out, then I want to be as prepared as I can be for entering the trucking business. I will be applying for local and long haul jobs just to be sure.

That's one thing that kind of confuses me. Bates has both long-haul and local driving programs. Why do just the local program when the long-haul will prepare you for both? Even before I "retired", I thought about doing local route sales, but most of them want some OTR experience if you've never done route sales. I'm going the same route as you are (ha! a pun!). I may decide that OTR isn't for me even before I finish, or maybe after I've had a taste of it for a year or so. At least I will still have the credentials for local. As much as I like driving trucks, the transit job would keep me home and the benefits are great. If that doesn't pan out, then I want to be as prepared as I can be for entering the trucking business. I will be applying for local and long haul jobs just to be sure.

Why do just the local program when the long-haul will prepare you for both? The Long Haul and Local course concentrate on different areas of trucking. For instance, we get a lot more training in mapping and routing. The Local classes drive more trucks, covering more than Class A type. I don't know all the differences. Like you said, the long haul course will prepare the student for most anything required to get a local job. I was talking to one of the "Local" guys and asked him if he expects to get a job right out of school. He told me the school does a good job of placing students and that most of his class already had potential jobs lined up.

Greg in Seattle! If your really considering a driving school don't look any further than Bates Community Collage in Tacoma.Having quite a bit of experience with driving schools myself, they offer the best instruction for the money. The course is 5 and a half months long, but you'll be better prepared when you go job hunting CDL Schools,,Sky here,,I plan to attend a cdl school in Chattanooga at the votech school there. It cost only 988.oo dollars. Its 12 weeks long..I was surprised to hear that some schools were longer..My son went to Schneider and he was driving in 3 weeks and did well. But it cost a year of ur hide too for pay back time. Would rather go to a school I pay for and dont owe nobody nothing... Cash and Carry, lol. I would reccomend folks checking out their community colleges/votech combination schools for a CDL. WE have some private schools in Tennessee and they want 4000.00 bucks if u pay cash,,if u finance its almost 6000.00 bucks. ( thats insane and only 4 weeks long),,guess what,,they only want u money is the way I see it..Buyer Beware,,check out those CDL mill schools,,some of them r a sham,,,Research,,Research, Research,,its ur career ladies and gentleman,,not theirs,,take ur time,,it can save u lots of heartaches..Sky ;D
