I have been a long term driving instructor, and over the years of schools going under, greedy owners and students that were never serious about it. There is one thing that seems to last: The relationship I have with my ex-students.
I got a call from Katie today, she was in Idaho somewhere and just called to tell me how much she loves driving for a living. After 15 years of being a corrections officer, she wonders why she didn't do this years ago. This is why I am a driving instructor. That is what makes it worth it. Knowing I have helped someone out of their lousy way of making a living and into a different life that offers some freedom and adventure.
I makes it worth the effort to have your ex-students come by and show off their new rigs to those in school now and tell the newbies what a good instructor I am.
It is humbling to know I had a little piece of their life. That I was so important to them. I will never take my students for granted.

Today, we went on another field trip to Swift. (don't laugh) The recruiter told us they are trying to get their driver turnover below 90+%.
Back at school, we heard from one of our instructors that typically there is a 75% turnover rate in student drivers. People discover they can't live the lifestyle or whatever when they go into the workplace.
Last year, the nation wide driver turnover rate was 119%! That's disheartening to anyone, let alone an instructor who takes his/her job seriously, knowing that all the effort put into teaching can be gone so easily.
It must be a great feeling to know that you've made that kind of impact on someone!
My instructor has a photo album filled with former students and their trucks who have come back to tell him thanks for the job he did teaching. Some day I'll be in there.

Cool. He is no doubt a great instructor.
Today we had one of our students kicked out for failing a drugscreen, another got handcuffed and hauled off at the DPS (DMV). Seems he had a warrant for assault with a deadly weapon! They had been looking for him for awhile.
The rest of the class was having a field day laughing at both of them.
That is two that will never share the road with us! Didn't know I was in law enforcement, did 'ja?
