Does anyone know much about Marten transport, Stevens transports or Gordon trucking? I’m thinking about going through the in Clackamas Oregon, and was looking for a good company to go to work for. I also saw that Schneider national was offering training for newbies as long as you worked for them for one year. Their course is only 14 days long do you think that’s long enough? And if there is someone that has gone through it I would like to hear your thoughts on the course good and bad.

Here are the good and bad points about a company school.
Good
1. The company trains you and continues to road train you when you begin your career.
2. You have no decision to make between companies. Your decision is clear.
3. No fianancing to arrange, no co-signers, no down payments.
Bad
1. You are going to complete your contract with them. If you sign up for a 1 or 2 year commitment, you are going to fulfill it. So even though you could change companies after 6 months if you hate the one you are at, with company training, you are stuck.
2. There is no state agency to approve or disapprove of the schools training. This could be considered either a good or bad thing, depending on the situation. There are also many terrible state approved schools out there.
3. Company schools seem to wash out the slower students quick. Not everyone learns the same. I had a chance to become a C.R. England instructor last year, they were ready to hire me. What I didn't like was the rigid training method they expected everyone to follow. If every student were the same, that would be easy. But I have had many students that were not "naturals" at driving but made a company a great driver. Did I have to spend some extra time with them? Yes I did. Would England have afforded me the extra time to work with them? Not unless it fell in line with their program.
I have to say that driving schools are only as good as their worst instructor. And some who start well gravitate into CDL mills. So you really need to read some of the stuff on this website so you will know many of the right questions to ask schools both private and company.
I wish you luck. And I am sure there have been many drivers who have been very happy with the company training.

truckertom thanks for reply After more thought I am going to bite the bullet And go through the IITR school. It's more money but in the end I feel that I well get more out of it and have more options for work. I don't like the thought of being stuck with an outfit That I didn't like working for. I would also like to thank everyone involved with this site, the amount of good information and the ability to read other peoples experiences has been very helpful. SO THANK YOU ;D
