Gloves and boots. Some schools require them, and some students don't have any.

Keep track of the time you drive, if you are spending too much time in the truckstops, raise hell about it to the director.
Remember, YOU are paying for this. You are the customer and I have seen student get 15 min. a day driving in a ten hour day! It does happen.

If you take all day trips, you might go to truckstops for lunch... in that case, bring your own if money is tight. Same goes for night drives. You definitely need good gloves. I've seen too many students show up without any gloves, and then get their hands all filthy doing their PreTrip and then bring it in the truck with them, to get crud all over the steering wheel and shifter. I guess I was mean, but I made them go back inside and wash their hands. When you get into your own truck, you certainly don't want habits like that. Oops, I stepped up on a soapbox. Anyway, other expenses.... Find out if the school will charge you if you have to take the CDL test more than once. Some places will do so if you have to take it a second or third time. Not a good policy, I don't think, but some do it anyway. There is also the expense of the license itself, of course. Hmm... guess that's all I can think of.... oh no, one last thing... there's the cost of the brown-nosing gift to your favorite instructor ;D ;D ;D

"there's the cost of the brown-nosing gift to your favorite instructor"
I have a drawer full of pocket knives from students, I will never buy another one, now if I could get a truck radio......
We have a meal ticket program where the students can get the lunch special at the local truckstop. It does go on thier tab but at a discount to the out of town students. And evening meal is also provided.
Local students buy their own or pack their own but at a lower tuition.

I am a homeless polisher. The gloves I've got, and brown noseing is not an option. I'm very familiar with the lifestyle, even down to the CB licence and giveing rookies directions. I'm really most concerned with the lack of money and what I'm going to need to succesfully compleate a drivers training course. ;D

Ok, now I can perhaps help you. In just about every state, there is a rehabilatation program for people starting over, they have sent several students through the schools I have instructed at in the past. We have here in Texas the TRC (Texas Rehabilatation Commission) and the TWC (Texas Workforce Commission). They do pay for students going through a driving school.
You do have to qualify, and if you can do that you may get the boost you need when you need it. People do start over.

Nope, you weren't being mean at all. That's why men need women, to keep them civilized. You definitely need good gloves. I've seen too many students show up without any gloves, and then get their hands all filthy doing their PreTrip and then bring it in the truck with them, to get crud all over the steering wheel and shifter.
