Hey guys I'm a eager young gentleman longing to get into the trucking industry. My question is if i get my class A 18 can i drive straight truck for 4 years then try to apply for otr position. Or should i just wait till 21 and get it all done at once. I was thinking about straight truck because i dont think theres alot of local t/t jobs in Pennsysalvania

Looks like it depends on which part of PA you're in. Locally, in the Scranton area there are lots of help wanted ads for Class A drivers starting at age 22 to 26, depending on the company.
And there are fewer straight truck Class B driver help wanted ads out there. But since we now have a lot of distribution centers in this half of the state that probably makes Class A drivers more wanted.
I imagine that in the central and western areas, straight trucks might be in more demand for mining and farming businesses. You might be able to drive for one of those businesses for a couple of years to get your feet wet and then upgrade to a CDL A.
Alternately, don't overlook the possibility of doing a hitch in the military to get your CDL and to gain usable driving experience. I have a friend working for PennDot who got his CDL A while in the Army and is now a PennDot plow driver and equipment operator for pretty decent money without the problems of being an OTR driver.
