Looking at the three school available to me, I'm scratching my head over a couple of the course options available to me. One school has nothing but a straight CDL course that's said to be tailored for thedriver needs of the food distribution company that owns the school.
The second school has a CDL course, plus an add-on externship program. There as a newbie CDL driver I would drive five solid weeks as a trainee with one of 6 companies: TMC, Werner, Action, CR England, CRS or Swift.
The third school offers similar externships with a six week trainee driver period. I should find out who their participating companies are tomorrow morning.
The big point is that those five weeks with the second school will be counted as SIX MONTHS of driving experience by the participating companies should I decide to sign on with them afterwards. I imagine that the third school's program has similar results.
My question; is going into such a program worthwhile or would simply hiring on with those firms after getting my CDL be better? It would certainly make a difference if I was to make the cut and get into someone like TMC's program and then hire-on at the six month point with only a CDL and five or six weeks of real OTR experience.

I imagine that the third school's program has similar results. Those five weeks counting as six months will most likely only be counted as 6 months at that company. If you decide to change companies, those six months experience will in all probability vanish.
