I regret to inform you that "A Driver's Journal" has no choice but to go "pay to read" as of September 2003. This is not something I particularly wanted to do, but rather, something I was forced to do. I had to make a choice between quitting writing it and making it pay for the tremendous amount of time that it requires.... and I chose to try the "Pay to Read" route. It might backfire and no one may decide to pay to read it. I certainly understand making that choice in these difficult financial times. If even one person subscribes, I will continue to write. If it turns out that so few people subscribe that I cannot continue, I will refund everyone's money. I will avoid this like the plague because when it comes down to it, I enjoy the writing and I think it helps people decide on trucking better than almost any other source. Find more info here: www.newbiedriver.com/Journal/2003/sept2003.htmSubscribe here: www.newbiedriver.com/Journal/Subscribe.aspI expect to have a couple of months worth of updates done by Sunday, Nov 16th and will be mailing the mail list once they're finished. The subscription cost is $4.95 per six months. Thank you for your support.

I'm not sure a time-limited subscription will be the best way to go. The readers have differing amounts of free time to read, and different reading speeds as well. And you may not be able to generate another installment for weeks or months, if you're out on the road a lot or your laptop crashes.... I've read all of it so far, as well as the Trainee Tales, and enjoyed it, and am waiting for more. Might I suggest a pay-per-chapter, like the old serial newspapers - 25 cents for the next installment -Charles

crrrrrap I'm real bummed to hear that. I doubt I am going to be on as much to keep reading, and on top of that I am no longer doing business with paypal. They ripped me off quite nicely, and it appears that the matter will have to be decided by the courts. Judging by the sheer number of people already suing them for their shady practices I think it will be quite some time before I even get a chance to get my money back. I'll miss reading the journal... It's not the five bucks as your time spent on this site is certainly worth more than that. Hell, I spent more than that on the ad-free plan. It's just kind of a hassle to chip in, especially via paypal, when I don't even know if I will get to enjoy it regularly now.

I've not had any bad experiences... In fact, I got ripped off on EBay.com and PayPal got my money back for me. I use them for store processing because merchant account fees have become so outrageously expensive. Sorry to hear about your bad experience and thank you very much for the forum credits. I think there were 8 at last check and I just applied one towards November and December. I am going to put thought into what you and Charles posted and think of a possibly different way to do it or a different option for those who aren't at their computer for long periods of time. Charles, you may be on to something with the chapter thing, but the technical requirements of going by chapter would be time consuming in their own right.... ? Anyone's suggestions, ideas, thoughts, etc are welcome.

Charles, you may be on to something with the chapter thing, but the technical requirements of going by chapter would be time consuming in their own right.... ? It would be a little time consuming, unless you are real handy with server side scripting. You'll have a lot of hours into debugging it, and probably many more updating the code, along with writing the chapters. Right now you have your database for your mailing list which shouldn't be too bad, and one for the forum that is handled outside of your regular host. For a subscription thing you're going to have to deal with one on your host. Hopefully that is included in your hosting plan already. I don't know... makes my brain hurt even thinking about it. Heh. I wish there was some other way to do this though.

I'm not sure how to answer that without making it more complicated than necessary. The thing is that it takes enough time that I have to forgoe (sp?) a part time job in order to have the time to write. Truth be told, I prefer to write, so not making as much $ as the part time job is okay, but making nothing just isn't possible. If I win the lottery, I promise I will repeal this instantly!

So if you won the lottery would we be reading "A Vacationers Journal in the Caribbean"? Shane Amen!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'd buy myself a big, fancy show truck, park it in the front yard and drive it around the block when I got the urge.... that is, when I wasn't in the Tropics.

Rachelle, We will be subscribing to your journal! When we got into this industry about 2 years ago, your site was an excellent source of information. The handbook was written clearly and helped us to know what questions to ask. Thanks a bunch!!!

Rachelle I would like to subscribe to it but can't right now. I am in a situatation such as if I needed two pennies to rub together to start a fire I would have to borrow them from somebody. Once I get my OTR Job and start making that green stuff again your book and the Journal are amoung the first things on my list. Right below longjohns and a heavy winter jacket. Living in Florida the last year has spoiled me and I am not a big fan of the cold.

Rachelle! I'd like to subscribe to your journal. In fact, I'd like to pay for a year's subscription right now. Unfortunately, for reasons that are too complicated to go into here, I cannot and will not use PayPal ever again. I would be more than happy to send you cash or a money order, if you can set me up with a password. I could send you payment as soon as tomorrow. Thanks, Bryan ;D
